The transformation of this historic property is nothing short of breathtaking. Renovating a home with such a rich history can be challenging, as it's essential to preserve its character while modernizing it. Yet, the essence of these stories is what makes the design process so rewarding.

In a recent conversation with the team behind the renovation, we learned about their journey through the complete overhaul of this beautiful 1770s home in Fall Kill, New York. Delyse, the CEO and Principal Broker, along with Jon, the CFO and Real Estate Agent, founded the firm a decade ago when they saw a need for a comprehensive service in home care and sales. Their vision came to fruition in January 2021, with the launch of their brokerage and later, a design studio.

What drew you to this property and inspired its renovation?

Upon first seeing the house, I felt a magical aura. Despite being covered by layers from the 60s to the 90s, the home's original charm remained. Plus, the tranquil location was a significant draw; many homes from this era are now on busy roads, but this one is nestled in peace.

When we acquired the house, it was in dire condition, and we felt privileged to breathe new life into it.

What unique architectural features does this home possess?

After months of closing on the property, we faced unexpected challenges like burst pipes, which required further restoration. Uncovering the original floors, hand-hewn beams, and antique windows was a delightful surprise. Each discovery demanded meticulous restoration, but the effort was well worth it. The house had been neglected, and we were honored to act as its caretakers.

My intention was to respect the home's historical significance rather than to alter its essence.

You showcased an impressive before-and-after of the renovation on social media. How did you approach the small windows and low ceilings?

My focus was on honoring the home's character rather than changing it. I turned perceived challenges into strengths. Low ceilings create intimacy, while smaller windows offer a cozy ambiance. We chose rich wall colors and a monochromatic scheme to let the architectural features shine. The addition of a bright living space beautifully contrasts the original areas.

Although the house isn't large, having multiple living and dining areas facilitates a smooth transition between the old and new.

What major renovations did you prioritize to maintain the home's integrity?

We preserved all original elements while replacing anything that was not original, allowing us to unite the old and new without compromising the home's character. We chose handmade materials wherever possible, avoiding white walls in favor of unique textures. The decision to use a prep table instead of a traditional island further enhanced the character, embracing a patina that will develop over time.

How did you balance modern living with historical features in your design?

We aimed for a flow that honors the home's history while providing modern comfort. The compact nature of the house encourages seamless transitions between spaces, fostering a connection to both the past and the present.

How did you incorporate natural elements and textures into your design?

The house's imperfections are part of its charm. Our design decisions were carefully crafted to respect the home's integrity, drawing inspiration from its original beauty. We selected neutral, organic furniture to complement the structure, enhancing the overall aesthetic while ensuring modern comforts.

In what ways did the Catskills' stunning landscape influence your redesign?

Being on the property creates a deep connection to the surrounding environment. The stream, barn, and stonework are rich with history, enhancing the overall experience of the home and its location.
