Few areas in the home create as much organizational challenge as the pantry.
Whether you prefer uniform storage solutions, transfer items into glass containers, or leave them in original packaging, pantries can easily become chaotic rather than chic.
Who better to provide pantry organization insights than Jeremiah Brent? The designer and former Queer Eye star excels at mastering this complex space. I caught up with Jeremiah to discuss his crucial rule and best strategies for a well-organized pantry.
Jeremiah Brent's Key Rule for Pantry Organization
As a pantry organization expert, Jeremiah is currently collaborating with a brand to give one lucky winner a pantry transformation.
His top piece of advice? Declutter your pantry. 'Edit, edit, edit,' he emphasizes. 'Editing is essential. It doesn't cost anything but a little time, and it plays a significant role in reorganizing and maintaining your items.'
For optimal results, Jeremiah suggests doing this regularly. 'Every few months, clear everything out and assess what you have. You’d be amazed by how much has gone bad.'
Expired food is among the items experts advise against keeping in your pantry. Grab a trash bag, like the Hefty Ultra Strong 13 Gallon Trash Bags from Amazon, and start discarding expired items while keeping the pantry essentials you can skip.
Jeremiah adds, 'Getting everything out, reorganizing, and categorizing makes a huge difference.'
Importance of Editing Pantry Items
Throughout his experience revamping numerous pantries, Jeremiah has noticed how often people neglect to edit their items, accumulating products that go unused.
'I'm guilty of it too,' he confesses. 'While moving recently, I found something that expired in 2020. I thought, “How do we have a five-year-old can?”
'Pantries tend to become dumping grounds where items are forgotten, so maintaining organization can help avoid this. That’s why I appreciate shelf-stable products. They allow you to store things without worrying about them spoiling quickly.'
When discussing pantry storage, Jeremiah favors stylish glass jars, like the Anchor Hocking Heritage Hill Glass Jars available at Walmart, admired by many, including Martha Stewart.
‘Invest in glass jars,’ he suggests. ‘I use them for pasta and flour. Affordable containers help keep everything organized.'
‘You don't have to spend a fortune. Simply having a method for how you store items can make a big impact.'
Jeremiah reveals that when organizing his fridge, he uses a 'beautiful bowl' for his eggs. 'It may be simple, but it looks nice,' he notes.
However, he acknowledges that not everyone can afford or has the option for a custom pantry. Often, we must work with inherited cabinets and spaces. He recommends making minor, budget-friendly changes to maximize 'every square inch.'
Realistically, Jeremiah points out, 'You don't need to buy a bunch of new items. No one has the time or wants to spend excessively.'
'Consider adjustable or pull-out shelving; they’re affordable and can significantly enhance your storage capacity.'
