I've experimented with various bathroom cleaning hacks, from using a dishwand to polishing fixtures with toothpaste. However, I had yet to try the unconventional method of using a potato to clean my shower.
This humble vegetable is a staple in kitchens, but can it work as a cleaning agent? Spoiler: not really.
Curious about this viral cleaning trend, I decided to test it out so you won't have to.
Testing the Potato Shower Cleaning Hack
What makes a potato potentially effective for cleaning? Potatoes contain oxalic acid, which may help dissolve grime and dirt. Sounds interesting, right?
If you're eager to try, gather these items:
- A potato
- A cleaning cloth: I opted for a J-cloth, similar to the Scotch-Brite Multi-Purpose Cloth.
- A microfiber cloth or soft towel, such as the MR.SIGA Microfiber Cloth.
1. Wipe the Potato on Your Shower Screen

I selected a potato with a broad surface area.
To start, I cut the potato in half and used one half to rub over my shower screen.
While I wasn't sure if there was leftover residue from my previous cleaning attempts, the potato made my shower look worse rather than better.

The potato highlighted existing marks and dust on the surface.
2. Wait, Rinse, and Dry
With expectations low, I waited for two minutes while the potato worked its magic (or lack thereof).
Once the time was up, I used a damp cloth to wipe off the starchy residue. A removable showerhead would have been great, but mine doesn't have that feature.
To finish up, I dried the glass with a soft microfiber cloth from Walmart, but a regular towel works too.
Even though these towels are disposable, I tend to wash and reuse them to be eco-friendly.
Final Thoughts

I wasn't impressed with the results.
Ultimately, my shower didn't achieve that sparkling clean look. Instead, it appeared smudged and uninviting, making this potato hack one I won't repeat.
Instead, I reverted to my trusted cleaning spray for showers. I particularly like the Method Daily Shower Spray Cleaner, which uses plant-based ingredients to deliver a streak-free shine that a potato simply can't match.
I'm a fan of Method products for my entire bathroom, far preferring them over vegetable methods or the recent teabag cleaning approach!
